Mobile Journalism (MoJo) (News Production for Web based platforms)
Mobile Journalism, often referred to as MoJo, is a form of journalism where reporters use mobile devices like smartphones, tablets, or lightweight cameras to capture, edit, and
distribute news content. It enables journalists to gather news, create stories, and publish them directly from the field using portable and easily accessible tools.
MoJo has gained significant traction due to the widespread availability and advancements in mobile technology. Some key aspects of Mobile Journalism include:
Mobile Journalism (MoJo) is a form of digital reporting where trained journalists
use mobile devices to gather news. A mobile device refers to a Smartphone or a
Tablet with iOs or Android operating systems. Reporters use mobile devices as
tools to shoot, edit and broadcast the news contents. Media persons have become
more mobile and independent in executing their assignments using Smartphones. It
is gradually gaining popularity among reporters and news organisations as it helps
the organisations to spend less on hiring crew and on expensive equipment.
MoJo is cost-effective as smartphones are more convenient compared to the
traditional cameras that are heavy and require additional manpower to operate.
Sometimes, it is not possible to send Outside Broadcast Vans (OBV) to cover
news-breaks at several spots at the same time. It is during such situations that smartphones come handy for timely coverage of news occurrences. As smartphones are thoroughly equipped with in-built audio video settings with different MoJo apps, reporters can easily shoot, edit and upload their news contents on the web or to their organisation
Portability:
Mobile devices are lightweight and portable, allowing journalists to capture news on the go without carrying heavy equipment.
Accessibility:
Smartphones and tablets are commonly used and easily accessible tools. They offer various apps and accessories specifically designed for journalism, including high-quality cameras, microphones, and editing software.
Instant Reporting:
Journalists can quickly report breaking news as it happens, providing real-time updates to their audience through live streaming, social media, or quick story uploads.
Versatility:With a range of apps for photography, videography, editing, and publishing available on mobile devices, journalists can efficiently create multimedia content.
Engagement:MoJo facilitates more interactive and engaging storytelling by allowing journalists to create content that is visually appealing and easily shareable across multiple platforms.
Cost-Effective:
Compared to traditional journalism equipment, mobile devices are more affordable, making it easier for freelance journalists or smaller news organizations to produce quality content.
Despite its advantages, Mobile Journalism also has some limitations, such as limitations in terms of professional-level equipment, battery life, and potential issues with network connectivity.
Overall, MoJo continues to evolve as technology advances, changing the way news is gathered, reported, and distributed, making journalism more accessible and immediate for both journalists and audiences.
